Yes, absolutely -- I agree with you that there are many mediums in which we can communicate, and also think that each can convey a message differently (news vs. a book, for instance, as you have also said). As in your example of the internet, communication is very much about connecting people, and also about spreading information. I also agree, as you've said, that the opportunity to use Japanese in this project is a good opportunity to learn, and generates a more reflective process through which we can communicate knowledge to ourselves.
The internet is very convenient indeed, not only does it convey its message (like newspapers, books, etc), but it also provides a place for people to discuss it, like in comment sections under articles or forums. I feel like while other materials like you mentioned all have different forms of communication the internet has the freedom of choosing whatever kind of communication technique it wants.
